Tipping a private chef in Italy: what is customary?

In Italy tipping a private chef is not compulsory and not expected as it is in the United States: it is a free gesture. Table service and cleaning up the kitchen are already included in the price.

Tipping in Italy

In Italy there is no tipping percentage that is taken for granted, as there is in some other countries. The agreed price covers the chef’s work and nobody expects anything extra at the end of the evening.

If you enjoyed the service, a small gesture is appreciated, but it is entirely optional. A word of thanks or a review after the service is also a welcome form of recognition.

What is already included

The price you pay online covers the whole of the chef’s service: there is nothing to settle in cash at the end of the meal.

  • Ingredient shopping (on holidays groceries are agreed separately)
  • Cooking in your kitchen
  • Table service
  • Cleaning up the kitchen at the end

What to prepare before the chef arrives

The chef brings the ingredients but works in your kitchen. A little preparation makes the evening smoother for everyone.

  • Clear worktop space and some room in the fridge
  • A clean, working oven and hob
  • The table laid, or at least plates, glasses and cutlery to hand
  • Drinks ready and chilled, as they are not included
  • Directions for parking and access if the house is hard to find

When the chef arrives

The chef arrives well before dinner time to put away the shopping, prepare the basics and organise the service. You agree the exact time after confirmation, once the chef has your contact details.

You do not need to be in the kitchen while the chef prepares: you can welcome your guests. If you would like to watch them at work, just say so.

Other useful customs

Give allergies and diets in your request, not on the evening itself: the chef needs to take them into account when shopping. If the number of guests changes, let them know as soon as possible.

You choose the wine yourself, or you can ask for the sommelier service. If you need an invoice, request it when you book.
